Peer Review Process

All manuscripts are initially screened by a member of the Editorial Board to ensure that they fit within the aims and scope of the journal, and meet a minimum threshold of originality, rigour and clarity.

Manuscripts judged to be of potential interest to the journal's readership are sent for review to a minimum of two external referees. Referees are selected according to their reputation; their specialist expertise in the particular topic of the manuscript and/or the methods employed in it; and the journal’s prior experience of their rigour, helpfulness and timeliness.

Referees are asked to provide a reasoned evaluation of:

  • the relevance and interest of the results presented in the manuscript to the broader academic community
  • the soundness and explicitness of methodological choices and procedures
  • the clarity and coherence of the argumentation supporting the manuscript's conclusions
  • the breadth and comprehensiveness of the manuscript's contextualisation of its research question within the previous literature

The journal operates a double-blind peer review process, meaning that authors and reviewers remain anonymous for the review process, but reviewers may voluntarily opt to disclose their identity if they so prefer. The review period is expected to take around two months. Reviewers are asked to provide formative feedback, even if an article is not deemed suitable for publication in the journal.

On the basis of the referees' advice, the editors decide whether to accept the manuscript as submitted; to request a revision to address specific concerns before taking a final decision; or to reject the submission. The decision is communicated to the authors along with any comments made by the referees. Overall editorial responsibility rests with the journal’s Editor-in-Chief, who is supported by an expert, international Editorial Board.
